Handmade wool rugs and cushions
Eco friendly, thick and warm rugs and cushions, handmade from recycled wool on a wooden loom and felted in the mountain river.
Our rugs are probably the most comfortable rugs you'll ever encounter and perfect to complement any home interior. These heirloom rugs are made for those who truly appreciate the natural world.
These cocooning “granny chic” rugs and cushions are woven, washed, and dried, with a handmade, rustic feel that we fell in love with straight away. They’re made in just one village in the entire Ukraine (a country of over 40m people) in the unspoilt countryside of the Carpathian Mountains where woollen rug weaving is a very old school craft ( and very hard work!) which has stood the test of time for one reason: they add an air of warmth and cozyness to any living space.
Weavers believe that these rugs are their unique invention and no one else in the world makes anything similar.
They are totally Vegan friendly - no need to harm sheep, just a gentle, much-needed haircut in the spring and the wool is normally thrown away. So the weavers buy the wool, wash it several times over 3 days in the mountain streams, dry and brush the wool, spin it the old fashioned way, then dye if needed, and only then is it woven with hands on a special wooden loom, usually passed from generation to generation.
All knowledge is transmitted from mother to daughter and from father to son. Weaving is considered a family craft and almost the entire family is involved in this process. Children help weave yarn, women weave carpets and blankets and men help with drying and delivery.
Comforting cosiness of this rugs and cushions bring natural elements to your home - raw wool bringing a touch of rustic nature to your living space. It can be used as a bedspread, wall hanging, floor rug or chair cover.
When you order our rugs or cushions, money goes straight to local communities and will keep this rug weaving tradition alive, contributing directly to the local economy and sustainability. Ukraine's population has been declining since the 1990s because of a high emigration rate, where people ( especially younger) are searching for better life abroad.
Organic untreated wool is highly water resistant as it still contains the fatty lanolin from the original animal.
The nature of woollen rugs yield minimal to minor shedding that usually clears up after around a month after purchase (but under certain circumstances can take up to 3 months). That's not a fault but is part of a natural process.
